The Container Guest House is the first of several projects by Poteet Architects we will be featuring. As a national award-winning firm, is best known for their sensitive adaptive reuse of existing buildings and a fresh, rigorous approach to modern interior design. This project originated from ’s client’s wish to experiment with shipping containers. She lives in a small warehouse on a former industrial site just south of downtown. The finished project serves as a guesthouse and is fitted with a shower/WC and a custom stainless sink. The large steel and glass lift/slide and end window wall open the interior to the surrounding landscape. The remainder of the interior is used as a garden shed.

The emphasis was on sustainable strategies– first, the recycling of a “one-way” container for a new and permanent use. The planted roof is held off the container top, providing shade and air-flow to reduce heat gain. The interior is insulated with spray foam then lined with bamboo plywood, equally appropriate for the floor as the walls. The grey water from the sink and shower is captured for roof irrigation. The WC is a composting toilet. The rear of the container is screened by wire mesh panels which will eventually be covered in evergreen vines.

Other innovative material choices informed the design: the container “floats” on a foundation of recycled telephone poles. The deck is made up of HVAC equipment pads (made of recycled soda bottles) set in a steel frame. The exterior light fixtures are blades from a tractor disc plow—a common sight in south .

DIY Small Space Pallet Garden Life On The Bacony

DIY Small Space Pallet Garden Life On The Bacony: "

My small front porch is now overflowing with plants. I have almost run out of space to put pots, so I'm taking my own advice and looking at how to use vertical space to plant my garden and get my Spring on. I found this great tutorial on a cheap DIY vertical garden.

Maybe it’s their gooeyness or their unsettling curvature, but these sculptures carved from ripe bananas by Japanese artist y_yamaden are wonderfully creepy.

Simply Amazing: Cupcake Fondue

Simply Amazing: Cupcake Fondue: "

Do you have a fondue pot? Is it collecting dust? Well, we have sweet reason for you to break it out.

Let me introduce to you a lil’ something I stumbled upon via the interwebs for my next cookery conquest—cupcake fondue! Put your cheeses aside and spare your chocolates. This party starter is all about homemade icing and whimsical toppings! Plan a night to bond with your besties by bringing them together for the sake of these bite-sized sweets. The setup is simple, yet the yield is great. What are you waiting for? Let’s fondue it. Now!

Cupcake Fondue

From Pint Size Social

3 cups powdered sugar

1/3 cup liquid (orange juice, fruit juice, milk, or water)

2 tablespoons light corn syrup

1. Make your fave recipe for cupcakes. This could be from scratch (go you!), or if you’re like me, choose a box mix from your local supermarket. Nomfest.

2. To make your fondue: Combine powdered sugar, orange juice, and corn syrup in the fondue pot. Adjust the consistency by eyeballing extra amounts of liquid or powdered sugar until you get a smooth, thick glaze. Amanda from Bake it Pretty suggested using orange juice to give it a citrus flavor, and cheese-like yellow fondue color, which I couldn’t agree with more! Grape juice will add a purple coloring to the fondue, and milk or water will make it easy to add your own choice of coloring.

3. Since the fondue is suitable for dipping as prepared—a flame underneath the pot is optional! Note: my fondue ended up being a little too runny following the directions. Looking back, I probably would have added a bit more powdered sugar or flour to thicken the mixture.

4. Display your toppings in ramekins and cups in a bar-like fashion. The variety of toppings i chose included pistachio bits, dried rose petals, organic coconut flakes, apple cinnamon granola, chocolaty rainbow drops, pink sugar, and sugar pearls.

5. Now, for the best part! Skewer your mini cupcakes from the side, dip the top into the fondue, sprinkle to your heart’s desire, and enjoy!

What party appropriate foods melt your heart? I love a good recommendation!

Could You "Finish" World Of Warcraft Without Killing Anything? [Make Lore, Not War]

Luke Plunkett — Could You "Finish" World Of Warcraft Without Killing Anything? Here's an exercise in patience: a World of Warcraft player has managed to reach the maximum level 85 without killing a single thing. For a game built around the idea of, well, killing things, that's quite the achievement!

Taking advantage of a loophole of sorts, player Everbloom has spent the last five months picking herbs, digging up bones and simply exploring the wilderness of Azeroth. These little tasks are known as "Professions", and are seen by most as a tedious, unrewarding way to go about accruing experience points in the game.

Everbloom, though, has a different approach, and highly recommends other players take the same route:

If you like to explore, and enjoy a challenge I really REALLY recommend this, I have been playing since day 1 on other characters and I even have an original Loremaster (you know, back when it was hard) and I saw so MANY new things with Everbloom that it really made it worthwhile for me to continue on with this character, and each level was a major achievement!
